Williams

The Williams Typewriter Company was founded by John Newton Williams in the late 1800's, with a factory located in Derby, CT. The typewriters have the most interesting typebar action, but the design choice to roll paper into a paper basket prior to typing makes these typewriters a little less appealing as an everyday machine as compared with others in our collection. This machine was one of the first visible machines, with a couple of the lines visible across the platen at a time. The typist would have to bend over the platen to read the lines, but that likely beats the blind writers of the time. The company went out of business in 1909.
