As early as 1931, sales men were setting themselves up to be the single source for all your whatever-needs, in this case, office. As you can see in the ad to your left, taken from page G-20 of The Des Moines Register on May 24, 1931, this set up the salesman to sell items the customer may not have considered due to item placement. This Remington-Rand portable is one of those items you might have realized you needed, of which the salesman took advantage to sell you other items. According to Polt's Classic Typewriter Page, this typewriter was basically a noisy noiseless, shaped a little like a noiseless typewriter, but with the familiar clacking sound of a typical portable.
