This German company was known for the manufacture of cars, and purchased the rights to manufacture the Empire typewriter, also known in the US as the Wellington. In 1899, the brand was changed to the Adler. The full name printed on some of the early Adler-branded typewriters is Adlerwerke vorm. Heinrich Kleyer, or Adler Works formerly Heinrich Kleyer. Heinrich Kleyer was a bicycle manufacturer before it started producing typewriters. Check out an article in ETCetera by Keith McBride, issue number 91, at for more history on this brand.
